01 / THREE MECHANISMS

These are not three strategies. They are three ways of being retrieved.

It is easy to treat SEO, AEO and GEO as competing disciplines that each need their own budget. They are better understood as three different things happening to the same content.

Search engine optimisation concerns visibility in ranked search results. Answer engine optimisation and generative engine optimisation are industry labels, not standardised channels or reporting categories. They are useful shorthand for content being selected into a direct answer or synthesised response, but the underlying products, retrieval methods and attribution behaviour vary by provider and continue to change.

The distinction is still useful because each surface can favour something slightly different. A ranked result needs a relevant, discoverable page. A direct answer needs a clean, extractable statement. A synthesised response needs enough unambiguous and corroborated context that a system can use the source without distorting it. None of those conditions guarantees selection, ranking or citation.

02 / WHAT EACH REWARDS

The same page can be excellent for one and invisible to another.

Consider a services page written entirely in confident marketing abstractions. It can rank perfectly well: it has the right words, inbound links and a sensible structure. Ask an answer engine what the company actually does, though, and there is nothing concrete to extract. Every sentence is a claim about quality rather than a statement of fact.

Now consider the opposite: a page that plainly states what the service is, who it is for, how engagement works and what it does not cover. It is less exciting to read. It is dramatically easier to retrieve, quote and summarise correctly.

Roughly, what each mechanism is looking for:

  • SEARCH

    A page that clearly matches an intent, is reachable, is not duplicated elsewhere, and is corroborated by other sources. Structure and crawlability are prerequisites rather than advantages.

  • ANSWER

    A specific question answered specifically, near a heading that matches how the question is asked. Short, self-contained statements that survive being lifted out of their surroundings.

  • GENERATIVE

    Enough consistent, corroborating detail across your own pages that a model composing an answer arrives at something you would recognise and endorse. Contradictions between your pages become errors in its output.

03 / THE SHARED FOUNDATION

All three depend on the same unglamorous groundwork.

There is no version of this where the technical foundation stops mattering. If a page cannot be crawled, is difficult for a crawler to render, contradicts its own canonical URL or performs poorly for visitors, the question of which acronym you are optimising for is academic. Google can render JavaScript, but server-rendering essential content reduces dependencies and makes the first response useful to more clients.

Above that foundation, the requirement converges on something simple: say what is true, plainly, in the place a reader would look for it. Define the entity — who you are, where you operate, what you actually do. Answer the questions people genuinely ask, in the words they use, near a heading that matches. Keep facts consistent across pages, because inconsistency is what produces confident wrong answers about you.

None of that is a trick. It is the same thing a careful editor would have asked for.

A useful test: could a stranger read one page and correctly describe what you do to somebody else? If not, no retrieval mechanism will do it for you.

04 / WHAT NOT TO DO

The failure mode is writing for machines instead of people.

A predictable overcorrection is already visible: pages padded with question-shaped headings nobody asked, FAQ blocks that exist only to carry structured data, and prose flattened into keyword-bearing sentences that no human enjoys reading.

This is a weak long-term strategy. Google explicitly recommends people-first content and treats scaled content created primarily to manipulate rankings as spam. Structured data must also describe visible page content and follow the feature-specific guidelines; adding markup does not make a page eligible for a result it does not honestly support. Meanwhile the human reader — who is still the one who decides whether to contact you — is being served worse.

  • SPAM FAQ BLOCKS

    Questions written to fill a schema slot rather than because somebody asks them. Easy to detect, and they dilute the questions that are real.

  • HIDDEN OR CLOAKED TEXT

    Content shown to a crawler and not to a person. This has been against search guidelines for two decades and has not become a good idea.

  • SCHEMA THAT OVERSTATES

    Structured data claiming ratings, awards or credentials the business does not have. This is a factual misrepresentation before it is an optimisation error.

  • ABSTRACTION AS COPY

    Pages that describe quality rather than substance. Nothing to rank, nothing to extract, nothing to synthesise.

05 / A PRACTICAL SEQUENCE

Fix the foundation, then the facts, then the structure.

In practice the order matters more than the effort. First, make sure the site is technically retrievable: crawlable, canonical, rendered without depending on client-side JavaScript, and fast enough not to be abandoned. This is the part that silently caps everything else.

Second, make the facts explicit and consistent. What the business does, where it operates, who is accountable, how engagement works, what is not offered. Consistency between pages is more valuable than clever phrasing on any one of them.

Third, add structure where it is genuinely descriptive — headings that match real questions, and structured data that describes what is actually on the page. Structure amplifies clear content. It does not rescue unclear content, and it is not a substitute for having something worth retrieving.

  1. SEO, AEO and GEO are useful labels for different discovery surfaces acting on the same content, not standardised channels or three competing strategies.
  2. Ranked lists reward relevance and authority; direct answers reward extractable statements; generative responses reward unambiguous, non-contradictory detail.
  3. The technical foundation — crawlable, canonical, renderable without JavaScript, fast — caps everything above it.
  4. Contradictions between your own pages become confident errors in a generated answer about you.
  5. Writing for machines instead of people fails on both counts: it is discounted by the systems and worse for the reader who actually decides.
